Far South

We felt we were at the end of the earth

Hobart, clear water to Antarctica,

standing on the slate grey dock, in pale grey fog

shivering alongside the abandoned

bronze huskies and explorer’s paraphernalia

sculpted and left as witness

to the brave who went out before

a curious ensemble on the frozen cobbles

having missed the boat south.

Tasmania, ‘The Natural State’ they say here

where the four seasons gamble daily

for pride of place.
