If we hadn’t had the children,
this would have been our fate
no smudged lip prints on the window
no scuffed knees straddling the gate,
toys still boxed too tidily
the biscuit tin secure
incessant babbling absent
how much more can we endure,
no shoes strewn across the lobby
no coats draped across the newels
beds turned into pirate ships
old cutlery our jewels,
a tender thread’s been broken
our childish gossamer to your heart
we just wave on social media now
quarantined to keep apart.

Highly appropriate post Graham. One of the many severe disruptions that can affect us in a distancing scenario. We need to posit the alternatives and keep them well and truly in mind, but there will be a massive effect on society at large.

I fear for the parents who have to entertain their children instead of farming them off to school and/or grandparents. Computers pall in quite a short time and young parents aren’t as good as us old ‘uni at making games from nothing!. Strange days indeed. Stay well Ray!
